1. Enjoyment - The most important reason for servicing your skis or board is that waxing and tuning the edges will increase your enjoyment of your time on the slopes! You pay a lot for your sport so it is sensible to ensure you enjoy it as much as possible! A waxed and tuned board or pair of skis turns more easily, gives a smoother ride, and is easier and is less tiring to control. This means that you will have a better time in the mountains, you will be less tired and safer.
2. Speed - The second reason for servicing is to make your skis or board go faster – particularly important if you are racing (even against your friends) or training.
3. Protection - Finally servicing helps keep your equipment in top condition –new gear is expensive, so take care of it!
It is essential that you have a stable surface to use to tune your skis or board. It doesn’t matter if you are equipping yourself with a home tuning setup or an “on the go” race setup a solid surface that will accept vices will make everything easier and more efficient.
We are often asked if saw horses or woodworking benches can serve the same purpose?
Unfortunately the answer is no. The “bench” need to support the length of the ski so that you can press to scrape or brush or file. It also needs to be stable and which not only makes the processes easier, but will also keep hands and knuckles scrape and cut free!
Saw horses can be used as a last resort of for small children’s skis but a good bench is an excellent investment.
There are many table sizes available, and the best choice will depend on what types of equipment you will be tuning and the space you have to do it in. When tuning longer length skis, especially cross country, giant slalom or speed skis a longer profile table is a must. This gives you more room to space your vises and makes for a more stable ski and easier use. For snowboards or when space is limited shorter tables are also available.

Not really. Vices do make it a little easier to service well because they keep the base flat for waxing and hold on to the ski or board tightly when edging. You can service pretty much anywhere but by having vices you can be sure that you will give your equipment the best possible service.
Whats the difference? In short, the heating elements and the thermostat.
A non steam iron from the supermarket will work absolutely fine to get you started servicing your equipment, but it does not have the same even heat distribution across the heat plate and the heat can fluctuate a lot in cheaper irons. The dangerous thing about this is that too much heat in one spot could mean that you melt the bases of your equipment - if you do that there is no repairing them.
So a proper waxing iron is much easier and safer for waxing because it has even heat across the plate - so that the wax melts evenly on your base and if it starts to get too hot it will adjust and cool much sooner.
The first question is “Do I really need a special waxing iron?” The simple answer is yes.
Clothing irons are responsible for more tuning mistakes and ski damage than just about anything else. These irons usually contain pores that hold dirt and dust and work from 140°C to 240°C, where most waxes need to be melted between 100°C to 150°C. Clothing irons also tend to have athin base plate which results in hot and cooler spots giving an uneven finish. So not only will these clothing irons contaminate a ski base, but they are nowhere near sensitive enough properly wax a ski or board.
When choosing a waxing iron the three important features are the temperature control system, the power and the overall thickness and shape of the plate.
Plate Thickness directly corresponds to the quality of an iron. As the plate gets thicker the better the iron will be. The thicker the plate the longer the iron will take to heat, but will also hold a much more consistent temperature- evenly across the base. This allows the wax to melt evenly and more precisely than thinner plates.
Temperature Controls and their adjustability will also improve greatly with the quality of the iron. The most basic irons will simply have an on/off setting, usually keeping the iron around 125 degrees Celsius, with an indicator light for when the iron reaches maximum temperature. The next level of sensitivity incorporates an adjustable dial to roughly adjust iron temperature, usually between 100 to 150 degrees Celsius, with a light indicator for when the iron has reached the intended temperature. Most recreational tuners uses a dial adjust iron for the temperature flexibility at a very reasonable price. The controls most often found in tune shops and on the race benches are digital readout adjustable irons. These irons will have the same indicator light as lesser quality irons, but are micro-processor controlled in either five or single degree increments depending on how specific they need to be. Most five degree adjustable irons work from 100 to 160 degrees Celsius while one degree adjustable irons will go up to 180 degrees Celsius for pure fluorocarbon waxes and are crucial for racers in need of that extra edge on the course.
Power A more powerful iron (measured in Watts) will heat up more quickly and be better able to maintain temperature when in use.
